EXPLORE. Don’t stress if you don’t know what you want to do after college. This is your chance to find out. The odds are good that you will hold many jobs and even several careers after you graduate, so the key is to get the skills you will need to navigate through all of them. Employers and graduate programs alike will want to see evidence of the sort of critical thinking, communication, and analytical skills that are taught within many majors.

Your college advising office may encourage you to pick a major (and maybe some minors) as soon as possible, but this can be a mistake. Unless you are absolutely certain of your future plans, work first on your college’s general education requirements or take a class or two in your possible field of interest to see if you really like the major before committing to it. I have never seen multiple majors or minors pay off, so don’t spend extra time acquiring labels that no employer or grad school admission committee will care about.

Once you settle on a major, try to avoid changing it—changing your major can keep you in school longer than necessary, and the costs can add up. Use the time saved to gain experiences and skills—study abroad, gain foreign language competency, improve your quantitative skills, carry out a complex research project.
